The future of seamless smartphone access is almost here. Imagine effortlessly unlocking your phone by simply bringing your smartwatch close to it. While it might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, Google is on the brink of making it a reality with its innovative Watch Unlock feature.

First introduced at CES 2023, Google provided a tantalizing preview of what’s to come, demonstrating how the Pixel Watch could efficiently keep a smartphone unlocked. This concept builds upon Android 13’s Active Unlock API, which laid the foundation for this feature. Although showcased earlier this year, its actual rollout appeared imminent by August when the feature’s code was fully functional. However, the delay of Android 14 may have had some impact on its release.
Recently, 9to5Google got a firsthand look at the feature, and setting it up seems impressively straightforward. Once the feature becomes available, users can access it through the Pixel Watch mobile app. Navigate to Watch preferences and then Security. Alternatively, on Android 14, you can find it under Settings → Security & privacy → More security & privacy. From there, you can initiate the Watch Unlock setup. Picture those moments when your fingers are wet or facial recognition isn’t cooperating – this is where this feature truly shines.

There are a few conditions to keep in mind. For Watch Unlock to work, your wearable must be unlocked, on your wrist, and within 4 inches of your phone. A simple swipe up on the lock screen or a tap on an incoming notification, and your device will unlock. In testing, this method seemed to outperform even Face Unlock in terms of speed, demonstrating its efficiency. But don’t worry about security – every unlocking action triggers haptic feedback and a notification on your watch, allowing you to lock your device from your wrist. Additionally, if your watch initiates unlocking while a password or PIN screen is open, the phone will display an “Unlocked by your watch” message.

Google does offer a word of caution. Using Watch Unlock might be slightly less secure than traditional methods like facial recognition, fingerprints, or strong patterns. Furthermore, while it’s convenient, the feature may have a minor impact on your watch’s battery life.
Drawing a comparison to Apple’s Watch Unlock feature, when a user tries to access their phone, the system initially checks for facial or fingerprint recognition. If those methods fail, it verifies the presence of the watch. A successful detection results in the phone unlocking and a confirming vibration from the watch.

The excitement is palpable, and speculations are abound. Some believe that Google might introduce the Watch Unlock feature with the upcoming Android 14 in a few weeks, while others think it might be reserved for the launch of the Pixel 8, Pixel Watch 2, and the Wear OS 4 release in October. Regardless of the timing, the future of smartphone accessibility is evolving, and Android users can look forward to an exciting change – especially since Watch Unlock appears to be headed for non-Google hardware as well.
