Meta, the parent company of Instagram, introduced Reels on the platform in 2020, offering its take on the beloved short-video format popularized by TikTok. Instagram Reels allows users to craft bite-sized videos, each lasting up to 60 seconds, which are prominently featured on the Instagram Explore Page. This TikTok-inspired feature quickly became Meta’s fastest-growing content format, providing creators with the opportunity to earn ad revenue. Now, Instagram is giving users the ability to download Reels shared by others through Stories, enabling them to enjoy these videos later or share them with friends outside the app. Let’s dive into the steps for downloading Instagram Reels on both Android and iPhone devices.
How to Download an Instagram Reel The beauty of downloading Instagram Reels with Stories lies in its simplicity, as it doesn’t require any additional third-party apps or software.
- Open the Instagram app on your Android or iOS smartphone.
- Locate and open the Reel you wish to save.
- Click on the Share icon.
- Add the Reels to your story by tapping.
- Zoom in on the preview and click on the three-dot menu located at the top.
- Choose the “Save” option.
- Discard the story once you’ve successfully saved the Reel.
You can conveniently access the downloaded Reel from your device’s camera roll. Importantly, the downloaded video won’t bear an Instagram watermark and will display the username of the account that posted it.
As of now, only Reels shared from public accounts are eligible for download. If a Reel has been shared from a private Instagram account, it cannot be downloaded. Additionally, users with public accounts have the option to disable the ability to download Reels within the app’s settings.
Earlier in June, Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, announced that users in the United States would be able to download Reels from public accounts directly to their camera roll. Prior to this update, users could only share Reels from public accounts in their Stories or through direct messages. To do this, users simply tapped the share icon and selected the “Download” option. In the image shared by Mosseri, the Download option is prominently displayed in the bottom menu, alongside “Add to Story,” “Share,” and “Copy Link.”
